Branson School Tallant Science Center Renovation

Quality secondary education environments are essential for nurturing student growth and development, fostering critical thinking, personal growth and well-being.

This project involved the comprehensive renovation of a 6,500 square foot high-school science building constructed in 1966. Our aim was to transform the entire structure into a modernized learning space that prioritized health, functionality, and efficiency, surpassing current teaching standards. Key enhancements included redesigned laboratory and prep room layouts, updated mechanical, electrical, lighting, and plumbing systems, installation of new cabinets, furniture, and fixtures, acoustical improvements, as well as seismic strengthening measures. Through these upgrades, our goal was to create an optimal environment that enhanced both teaching and learning experiences for students and educators alike. The feature element was the addition of a large skylight positioned above a small exhibition/social space at the top of the main stair to the upper classrooms, allowing the abundant California sunshine to pour deep into the center of the building. Responding to the geometry of the existing building, the skylight took the form of a truncated pentagonal pyramid, forming a wire-frame ‘frustrum’ as a demonstration of geometric principles encountered in the curriculum.
