This comprehensive renovation transforms a Mid-Century Modern home in San Francisco’s Forest Knolls neighborhood, near Sutro Tower, by opening the interior to natural light, expansive views, and the surrounding hillside landscape.

The original house was characterized by a compartmentalized plan, low ceilings, and limited natural light. On the main level, interior partitions were removed to create a more open sequence of living spaces, while a vaulted ceiling and series of skylights bring daylight deep into the interior and give the central living area a greater sense of volume.

A new balcony and large retractable glass wall open the living spaces to southern views and create a direct connection between indoors and outdoors. At the ground floor, previously underutilized space was expanded and finished to provide additional living areas opening onto a new rear deck.

Improvements to the building envelope, sustainable materials, and high-efficiency mechanical systems increase energy performance and year-round comfort.

The renovation retains the home’s Mid-Century character while fundamentally changing its spatial experience, using light, volume, views, and connections to the landscape to transform what had been a dark and constrained interior.
