Morphing CORTEN // SWA Office Renovation
A material-driven transformation that connects landscape, architecture, and an industrial maritime past…
-
The 12,000-square-foot headquarters of internationally renowned landscape architecture firm is situated in a repurposed warehouse near San Francisco Bay that originally served as a site for building Liberty ships during WWII. Ojanen Chiou Architects re-conceptualized the outdated 1980s lobby to align with the firm's identity and work ethos, emphasizing the fusion of interior and exterior spaces common in landscape architecture. Cor-ten steel, chosen for its contemporary appeal, warm tones, and historical significance, serves as the feature material, seamlessly guiding visitors from the parking lot through the lobby to the studio. The panels were carefully engineered and installed to to create a sense of weightlessness. Translucent and clear glass complement the steel, allowing natural light to permeate deep into the interior while screening work areas from the public while a neutral palette of background elements accentuates the steel's color, texture and geometry. The design both respects the building's industrial and maritime heritage and captures the essence of the firm's guiding principles and values.
