Perched on a steep, wooded hillside in Novato’s rural Black Point area, this 2,000-square-foot, two-story residence responds directly to its ecologically sensitive setting near a protected wetland.

A compact footprint preserves existing blue oaks, while the house and garage are elevated on slender supports to minimize disturbance to the steep terrain. The elevated structure also takes advantage of expansive views across the wetland toward Mt. Tamalpais.

The architecture draws inspiration from the natural setting and simple vernacular structures, using a restrained form that sits lightly within the landscape. Inside, an open floor plan and generous glazing extend views through the house and strengthen the connection between interior spaces and the surrounding hillside.

Rather than reshaping the site to accommodate the building, the design adapts the building to the existing topography, vegetation, and views, allowing the landscape to remain the defining element of the project.
