This renovation transforms a 42-square-foot en suite bathroom in a 19th-century San Francisco Victorian into a quiet, spa-like retreat while preserving the character of the historic home. An adjacent walk-in closet was also converted into a second full bathroom, adding functionality within the existing footprint.

Inspired by the forests of Northern California, the design combines natural materials, contrasting textures, and warm indirect lighting to create a calm and intimate atmosphere. The unusually tall 13-foot ceiling is used to emphasize vertical space, making the compact bathroom feel substantially more expansive.

Careful spatial planning, layered materials, and restrained detailing give the new bathrooms a contemporary character that complements rather than imitates the Victorian interior. Electric radiant floor heating adds comfort without introducing visually intrusive equipment into the small spaces.

The project demonstrates how a limited footprint can be transformed through proportion, material, light, and efficient planning, creating two highly functional bathrooms within the constraints of an existing historic home.
