This renovation and expansion transforms a century-old Victorian home in San Francisco’s Noe Valley neighborhood to accommodate the needs of a growing family while preserving the character of the original house.
Approximately 1,000 square feet of new living space was added through a combination of horizontal and vertical expansion. At the rear, the house extends to create a larger living area, while new upper-level space provides two additional bedrooms and a small study.
At the center of the renovated home, a skylit staircase connects all three levels, bringing daylight deep into the interior and establishing a clear transition between the original house and the new spaces. Carefully selected materials maintain a dialogue with the historic structure while giving the interior a warm, contemporary character.
New windows are strategically positioned to capture views across San Francisco and increase natural light. Sustainable strategies include fly-ash concrete, FSC-certified lumber, and energy-efficient building systems.
The project balances preservation and transformation, retaining the Victorian home’s relationship to the neighborhood while adapting its interior organization, daylight, and living space for contemporary family life.
